Changes on National Landing Revealed by JBG Smith

Several changes made by JBG Smith have since been reported - showing a number of residential units take over spaces previously slated for office and clerical work.

Nestled inside the 150-acre mixed-used National Landing Complex (which has the 4 million square foot Amazon HQ2 and the 1 billion dollar innovation campus for Virginia Tech) is a one-story building in 2250 Crystal Drive and a 11-story vacant building on 223 23rd Street right across it. These two were originally supposed to be a 24-story, 520,000 square foot office building and a 31-story residential with 645 apartments and 20,000 square feet worth of retail. But now, JBG Smith has proposed to turn them into two 30-story residential buildings with a combined total of approximately 1440 residential units to be created.

This press release has since then been confirmed by a JBG Smith Spokesperson, and that the Arlington County Planning Department is currently underway in reviewing the proposed revisions from the original plans and applications. The only thing seemingly problematized by these changes is Jaleo by Jose Andres, a popular Spanish tapas restaurants set to close its doors on Oct 3, 2021 after more than a decade of serving the area - just to make way for the new development.

“We have a preliminary site plan submission on file to redevelop that site with two new 30-story residential towers containing 1,440 units, ground floor retail, and two new public open spaces,” said Matthew Pfeiffer (the county’s principal planner), in a statement about the changes to ARLnow.com “We expect that plan to be accepted very soon, after which we will work on scheduling the public review process.”
